Alvar Sunol's Biography
Don Alvar Sunol
Munoz-Ramos - known simply in the art world by his first name, Alvar - has not only mastered oil painting and
lithography, but also watercolor, gouache,
engraving, and even bronze sculpture. Alvar`s
home studio in Tiana, on the Spanish coast
outside of Barcelona, displays the wide variety of artwork he has
created since painting his first still life portrait at the age of
fourteen. For over thirty years, Alvar has
continually distinguished himself from other artists of his generation;
and that most clearly in the medium of lithography. Alvar`s
physical involvement in every step of their production, owing to the
complexity of each lithographic image, demands that he be both artist
and artisan. He works directly on the zinc plate when creating his art;
simultaneously employing his imagination, skill, and knowledge of the
mechanical process. In the summer of 2000, a retrospective exposition
of his painting, "Retrospectiva Alvar: Empremtes en el
Temps", was held by Catalunya`s
President, Jordi Pujol.
The catalogue raisonne for the show featured
an introduction by Eduard Carbonell Esteller, Director of the Museo
de Arte de Catalunya. With this official
acknowledgment of his importance to the history of Catalan art, Alvar assumes a well-earned place among Spain`s other twentieth-century masters: Pablo
Picasso, Salvador Dali, and Joan Miro
